City of Albany Commercial Christmas Trails
Our Commercial Christmas Decoration Project with the City of Albany
Since 2021, our Christmas team has had the pleasure and privilege of partnering with the vibrant City of Albany to transform its urban landscape into an enchanting wonderland during the festive season. Through our dedicated Commercial Christmas Decoration Project, we have brought large-scale joy and community engagement to the heart of Albany, helping to establish it as a must-visit destination for the holidays. This project, which includes stunning Commercial Christmas Trails, immersive walk-through installations, beloved selfie characters, and charming small-scale displays, has grown to become a cultural and economic highlight of the city’s calendar year.
In this blog, we’re taking you behind the scenes of this magical journey—sharing how this partnership has evolved over the years, the design and installation process that fuels the festive spirit, and the impact these professional Christmas decorations have had on the city, its residents, and its visitors.

Creating the Albany Holiday Experience
When the City of Albany first approached us in 2021, the goal was clear: to bring professional, high-impact Christmas decorations to public spaces that would inspire wonder, create memories, and support local tourism and business. As a city with a rich history, beautiful heritage architecture, and a strong sense of community, Albany had all the ingredients for a magical holiday transformation. What it needed was a cohesive and scalable festive design plan tailored to its urban layout and community values.
Our initial proposal for the Commercial Christmas Decoration Project focused on creating an immersive experience that would encourage residents and visitors to explore the city during the holiday season. Through a carefully curated selection of Commercial Christmas Trails, large-scale installations, walk-through displays, and photo-friendly elements, we aimed not just to decorate, but to invite participation, encourage foot traffic, and foster a sense of shared joy.

The Power of Commercial Christmas Trails
At the heart of our Albany project, lies the concept of the Commercial Christmas Trail—a visually captivating, walkable route that guides people through the city’s key landmarks and public spaces, all adorned with festive features. These Christmas trails are more than just a sequence of decorations—they are thoughtfully designed journeys that connect different parts of the city, encouraging exploration and discovery.
Each year, we collaborate closely with the City of Albany to select trail locations that align with community events, shopping precincts, and hospitality hubs. These trails typically incorporate:
- Large scale Christmas installations such as giant ornaments, illuminated archways, and bespoke features that reflect Albany’s unique identity.
- Interactive walk-through features like tunnels of light or oversized baubles, which invite people of all ages to step inside and experience the magic up close.
- Selfie-worthy characters and props, positioned strategically along the trail to encourage social media sharing and digital engagement.
- Smaller-scale festive displays in quieter corners or suburban nodes, ensuring no community feels left out of the holiday spirit.
By using Commercial Christmas Trails as a framework, we’re able to offer a cohesive festive experience that not only adds beauty to the city but also encourages meaningful community interaction.
Designing Christmas with Community in Mind
Every aspect of this Commercial Christmas Decoration Project has been deliberately designed with community engagement and local identity in mind. From the outset, we’ve worked hand-in-hand with Albany’s key stakeholders—including city officials, local business associations, and tourism officers—to ensure our designs align with broader city initiatives.
Our creative process typically begins in early March each year, allowing ample time for planning, prototyping, and stakeholder feedback. During this stage, we gather insights on: Which themes or motifs resonate most with the Albany community? How can we incorporate local landmarks and history in our decorations? What new technologies or materials can we introduce to elevate the display?
For example, in 2023, we recognised that some decorations were being vandalised and damaged. To address this, we redesigned our future displays to feature double-strength premium mesh material, significantly reducing the risk of climbing and damage to the decorations themselves. We also introduced custom-branded footers to each display, which not only enhance the visual identity but also provide robust protection against water damage and accidental kicking.
Additionally, we strategically increased the number of display locations, focusing on areas with the highest levels of visitor and foot traffic. This approach ensures that more people can enjoy the decorations while also helping to deter vandalism through increased visibility and community presence.

Walk-Through Features and Selfie Characters
One of the most beloved elements of our project has been the inclusion of interactive walk-through features and selfie characters, which have fast become icons of Albany’s festive season.
These features are designed not only for visual appeal but also to promote engagement. These immersive experiences are particularly popular with families and young children, many of whom return year after year to create cherished traditions.
Our selfie characters—such as life-sized reindeer, sparkling Australian animals, and whimsical elves—have also become landmarks in their own right. Strategically placed throughout the trail, these characters do more than just delight passersby; they encourage social sharing that extends the reach of Albany’s holiday experience well beyond the city limits. Visitors snap photos, share them online, and in doing so, become ambassadors of the festive magic—helping to attract even more foot traffic and tourism to the area.
Community, Culture, and Local Economy
The success of this Commercial Christmas Decoration Project is measured not just in lights and smiles, but in real-world outcomes. Local businesses report increased foot traffic and extended shopping hours during the holiday season, while hospitality venues benefit from the influx of visitors exploring the Christmas Trail. The decorations also support the city’s broader tourism strategy, positioning Albany as a destination for regional visitors seeking a festive day trip or weekend getaway. Culturally, the project has become a cherished annual tradition. Residents eagerly anticipate each year’s reveal, and feedback from community members has been overwhelmingly positive.
