Public Art Design & Signage Package

At The Factory, we believe that exceptional design and signage do more than guide—they enhance, inspire, and become an integral part of a space’s identity. This month, we’re thrilled to highlight one of our most rewarding projects to date: our comprehensive signage package for Altum Living, a premium retirement living community nestled quietly in the heart of Scarborough North.

Altum Living isn’t your typical residential development. Conceived as a peaceful sanctuary for retirees, it stands as a modern architectural gem, surrounded by the green canopies of a secluded cul-de-sac. Designed with elegance, functionality, and liveability in mind, the development blends the serenity of its natural setting with the sophistication of contemporary coastal design.

A Thoughtfully Designed Signage Package

Altum Living draws its architectural inspiration from the iconic art deco and functionalist styles that punctuate nearby Scarborough Beach. The building’s soft, sweeping curves and crisp geometric lines reflect this heritage beautifully. With a design that maximises natural light, encourages cross-ventilation, and offers uninterrupted panoramic views across six levels, the result is a space that feels as open and inviting as it is refined.

Every element of Altum was thoughtfully considered to support a high quality of life for its residents—from the tranquil landscaping and open communal areas to the intuitive internal layout. It’s a place where architecture, nature, and community coexist in perfect harmony. And that’s where The Factory came in.

Designing a Signage Package that Enhances the Experience

A project of this calibre requires more than standard signage solutions. It demands a cohesive, well-executed signage and environmental graphics package that integrates seamlessly into the architecture and overall experience.

Collaborating closely with Northerly Group and Altum Living, The Factory delivered a complete signage solution that reflects the building’s refined aesthetic and enhances the daily experience of residents and visitors alike.

Our scope of work for Altum Living included:

  • Custom Wayfinding Signage
  • Statutory and Compliance Signage
  • Decorative Glazing Films
  • A Bespoke Public Art Installation

Let’s take a closer look at each component of this package.

Bespoke Public Art Installation: A Focal Point With Meaning
One of the standout features of our involvement in the Altum Living project was the creation of a bespoke public art installation—custom-designed and fabricated by our team.

Gwen’s Leadership: From Vision to Reality

Gwen, our Senior Graphic Designer, played a pivotal role in shaping the creative direction of this project. Her approach was thoughtful and layered, guiding the process from initial concept through to execution. From designing the public art statement to overseeing the signage suite’s integration, Gwen ensured that every visual element worked cohesively.

One of her first tasks was to collaborate with the client’s internal designer to align on the creative vision. Through multiple rounds of consultation and refinement, Gwen translated the client’s objectives into compelling concept drawings that captured both form and function.

But she didn’t stop there. Taking the project a step further, Gwen spearheaded the development of realistic 3D models to help stakeholders visualise the final output. These models served as essential tools for approval stages and ensured design intent carried through to the final built environment.

Her involvement extended well beyond the design phase. Gwen followed the manufacturing process closely, liaising with fabricators to ensure every detail—from material selection to installation logistics—aligned with her vision. Her hands-on approach meant nothing was left to interpretation; every curve, colour, and finish was intentional.

One of the most distinctive elements of the project was the integration of public art, designed in collaboration with Perth-based artist Emily Jackson. Known for her community-driven and environmentally inspired artwork, Emily brought a deeply local perspective to the project.

Custom Wayfinding Signage: Navigating with Ease and Elegance

Wayfinding signage often goes unnoticed when executed well—but its importance cannot be overstated. For Altum Living, we developed a comprehensive wayfinding system that balances clarity with aesthetics, ensuring that residents and visitors can move through the space confidently and comfortably.

Our design approach focused on readability, accessibility, and elegance. We selected materials and finishes that aligned with the architectural palette—subtly brushed metals, soft neutrals, and clean typography. The result was signage that appears as a natural extension of the interiors, offering guidance without disrupting the atmosphere of calm.

From lobby directories and floor indicators to directional signage and door plaques, each element was designed and installed with meticulous attention to detail.

Statutory and Compliance Signage: Subtle but Essential

Compliance signage is a legal necessity in any residential or commercial development—but that doesn’t mean it has to be an afterthought. At The Factory, we pride ourselves on delivering statutory signage that meets all regulatory requirements while still maintaining the visual integrity of the space.

For Altum Living, this meant integrating fire safety signs, emergency exit markers, and accessibility indicators that were clear, durable, and in keeping with the overall design language. We ensured that each piece was precisely placed and manufactured to the highest standards, using materials that are both long-lasting and aesthetically appropriate.

Decorative Glazing Films: Privacy Meets Design

Altum Living includes a variety of shared spaces and private rooms where privacy and light control needed to be thoughtfully managed. To address this, we designed and installed custom decorative glazing films throughout the building.

These films serve both functional and aesthetic purposes. They allow natural light to filter through internal partitions while providing privacy where needed—such as in meeting rooms, wellness areas, and communal zones. Our designs featured subtle geometric patterns and frosted finishes, echoing the curvilinear motifs of the building’s exterior and contributing to a cohesive visual identity throughout.

It’s these small but impactful details that reinforce Altum’s commitment to high-quality, considered design.
